Granola bites vs protein bars: which is the better snack?

3 November 2026 · · By Noah, founder of Nola

Quick answer

Protein bars usually win on maximum protein per serve, often 15 to 20g, but many rely on protein isolates, sweeteners and sugar alcohols. Granola bites usually have shorter, whole-food ingredient lists, a more natural texture and around 5 to 10g of protein. If you want a snack that tastes like food and still adds protein, granola bites are often the better everyday choice.

Granola bites keep the texture of whole oats instead of a dense bar.

Walk down the health food aisle and you will find dozens of bars and bites all claiming to be the perfect snack. Both can be good choices, but they are built very differently. Here is how granola bites and protein bars compare, so you can choose the one that suits how you actually snack.

How are they made?

Most protein bars are made by blending protein isolates, binders such as glucose or fibre syrups, and fats, then pressing or extruding the mix into a bar. Many are coated in a compound chocolate layer. To keep sugar low while staying sweet, manufacturers often use sweeteners such as sucralose or stevia and sugar alcohols such as maltitol or erythritol.

Granola bites are generally closer to home cooking. Whole rolled oats are mixed with nut butter, honey or dates and mix-ins like seeds, chocolate or fruit, then rolled into balls. Some add protein powder to raise the protein content, but the oats and nut butter remain the main ingredients.

Which has more protein?

Protein bars usually have more protein per serve. Many contain 15 to 20g in a single bar, and some go higher. Granola bites vary widely, from as little as 3g per serve to around 10g in versions with added protein. A four-ball serve of Nola has between 8.0g and 8.4g, depending on the flavour.

For most people, the extra protein in a bar only matters if you are trying to hit a high daily target or eating straight after heavy training. For an everyday snack, around 8 to 10g is a useful amount.

Which has less sugar?

Low-sugar protein bars often have very little sugar on the label, but they achieve that with sweeteners and sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols can cause bloating or digestive discomfort in some people, especially in larger amounts. Granola bites made with honey or dates contain natural sugars instead. A serve of Nola has 10.3 to 11.3g of sugars, mostly from honey and, in the flavoured bags, a little dark chocolate or fruit.

Neither approach is automatically better. It comes down to whether you prefer a lower sugar number or a shorter ingredients list without sweeteners.

Which tastes and feels better?

Texture is where the two snacks differ most. High-protein bars can be dense, chewy or slightly chalky, particularly at higher protein levels. Granola bites keep the texture of the whole oats, so you get a crunchy outside and a softer middle. Because they come as several small pieces, you can also eat a little or a lot, which a bar does not allow once it is open.

Which has the cleaner ingredients list?

Granola bites usually have the shorter list. Our Oat and Honey has eight ingredients: rolled oats, almond butter, honey, whey protein concentrate, pepitas, chia seeds, vanilla extract and sea salt. Many protein bars list fifteen or more, including emulsifiers, flavours and sweeteners. Shorter is not always healthier, but it is easier to understand what you are eating.

How do the prices compare?

Protein bars in Australian supermarkets commonly sell for a few dollars each. Granola bites are often sold in multi-serve bags, which can work out cheaper per serve. A Nola bag holds four serves, and buying a box of six brings the price down further.

Which should you choose?

Choose a protein bar if you need the highest possible protein in one hit, for example straight after a heavy session or when you are following a strict plan. Choose granola bites if you want an everyday snack that tastes like real food, has a short ingredients list and still gives you a meaningful amount of protein. Plenty of people keep both: a bar for after training and a bag of bites for the afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

Are granola bites better than protein bars?

It depends on your goal. Protein bars usually have more protein, while granola bites usually have simpler ingredients and a more natural texture with moderate protein.

Do granola bites have enough protein?

Many have only a few grams, but versions with added protein, like Nola, provide around 8g per serve, which suits most everyday snacking.

Why do some protein bars upset my stomach?

Some contain sugar alcohols such as maltitol, which can cause bloating or discomfort in some people, especially in larger amounts.
