The best snacks to keep in your gym bag

3 November 2026 · · By Noah, founder of Nola

Quick answer

The best gym bag snacks are portable, survive a few days without a fridge, and combine protein with some carbohydrate. Good options include granola bites, bananas, rice cakes with nut butter, roasted chickpeas, beef jerky and long-life flavoured milk. Eat a lighter, carb-focused snack before training and a protein-rich one after.

The worst time to work out what to eat is when you have just finished a session and you are starving. A few good snacks living in your gym bag stop you raiding the vending machine on the way home. The trick is choosing foods that will not get squashed, melt or go off by Thursday.

What makes a good gym bag snack?

A snack that lives in a bag has a tough job. It needs to be sealed or resealable so it does not end up in your shoes. It should be shelf-stable for at least a few days, which rules out most fresh dairy and anything with mayonnaise. It should handle Queensland heat without turning into a puddle, which rules out a lot of chocolate bars. And it should bring something useful to your training, usually protein, carbohydrate or both.

What should you eat before a workout?

Before training, you want energy that is easy to digest. Carbohydrate is your main fuel for most workouts, and too much fat or fibre right before a session can sit heavily in your stomach. Aim to eat a small snack 30 to 90 minutes before you start.

  • A banana. Fast carbohydrate in its own packaging. Eat it early in the week before it bruises.
  • Rice cakes with honey. Light, quick and easy to keep in a container.
  • Two granola bites. Half a serve gives you oats and honey for energy with a little protein, without feeling full.

What should you eat after a workout?

After training, the priority shifts to protein to help your muscles repair, along with carbohydrate to refill your energy stores. Within a couple of hours of finishing, aim for something with around 10 to 25g of protein.

  • A full serve of granola bites. Four Nola balls give you 8.0 to 8.4g of protein plus around 22g of carbohydrate from oats and honey.
  • Beef or chicken jerky. Very high in protein and almost indestructible in a bag, though it can be high in salt.
  • Long-life flavoured milk. UHT milk keeps unopened without a fridge and combines protein with carbohydrate.
  • Roasted chickpeas or edamame. Crunchy plant protein with plenty of fibre.
  • A protein shaker with powder. Add water after your session. Useful if you need more than 20g.

Snacks to leave out of your gym bag

Some snacks look convenient but do not survive bag life. Fresh yoghurt and soft cheese need a fridge. Most chocolate bars melt in a hot car. Loose nuts end up everywhere unless they are in a tight container. Crackers and chips get crushed and offer little protein for the energy they provide.

How to keep snacks fresh in your bag

Use a small pouch or zip lock bag to keep snacks separate from sweaty gear. Swap the contents once a week, and do not leave your bag in a parked car on hot days if you can help it. For granola bites, keep the bag sealed between uses. Once a bag of Nola is opened, the label recommends keeping it in the fridge, so take out a serve for the day rather than carrying the whole open bag around for a week.

Why we built Nola for the gym bag

Nola started because I wanted something to throw in my own gym bag that did not taste like a protein bar. The resealable pouch keeps the balls together, four balls make a serve with about 8g of protein, and the oats and honey cover the carbohydrate side. Oat and Honey has the most protein of our three flavours, and it holds up best in the heat because it has no chocolate.

Building your gym bag kit

A good kit for most people is one quick pre-workout carb, one protein-rich post-workout snack and a bottle of water. Keep it simple and restock it every week, and you will never have to settle for whatever is in the servo fridge again.
