How to store granola balls so they stay fresh

3 November 2026 · · By Noah, founder of Nola

Quick answer

Store unopened granola balls in a cool, dry place out of direct sun. Once the bag is open, squeeze out the air, reseal it and keep it in the fridge. Granola balls also freeze well in an airtight container. Avoid leaving them in hot cars or humid spots, where the honey softens and the oats lose their crunch.

Granola balls are made from oats, nut butter and honey, which means they are sensitive to the same three things that ruin most pantry snacks: heat, air and moisture. Store them well and they stay crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. Store them badly and they turn sticky, stale or crumbly. Here is how to get it right.

How should you store an unopened bag?

Keep unopened bags somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight. A pantry or cupboard away from the oven and dishwasher is ideal. Sunlight and heat soften the honey and nut butter, which can make the balls stick together, and warm temperatures speed up the natural oils in nuts and seeds going stale. Always check the best before date on the bag.

How should you store an opened bag?

Once a bag of Nola is opened, our label recommends keeping it in the fridge. Squeeze out as much air as you can, press the seal closed along its full length, and put the bag in the fridge. The cold keeps the honey firm, slows the oils from going stale and helps the balls hold their shape. They will be a little firmer straight from the fridge; leave them out for five minutes if you prefer a softer bite.

If the resealable strip gets damaged, tip the remaining balls into an airtight container instead. A glass or plastic container with a tight lid works well.

Can you freeze granola balls?

Yes. Granola balls freeze well because they contain very little water. Place them in an airtight container or freezer bag, ideally in a single layer at first so they do not freeze into one clump. Once frozen, you can stack them. To eat, take out what you need and let it sit at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes, or eat them slightly frozen on a hot day for a chewy, cold snack.

How do you carry them during the day?

For a day out, take out one serve, which for Nola is four balls, and pack it in a small container or zip lock bag. Keep it in your bag rather than your pocket, and out of the sun. Leave the rest of the opened bag in the fridge rather than carrying it around for days. On very hot days, a small insulated lunch bag with an ice brick keeps the balls firm.

Where should you avoid storing them?

  • Hot cars. The inside of a parked car in an Australian summer gets hot enough to soften honey and melt chocolate quickly.
  • Next to the stove or kettle. Steam adds moisture and the heat softens the balls.
  • Open bowls. Air exposure makes oats go stale and can attract ants.
  • Humid bathrooms or laundries. Moisture makes the outside sticky.

How can you tell if they have gone off?

Granola balls rarely go mouldy because they are low in moisture, but the oils can go stale over time. Signs that a ball is past its best include a bitter or paint-like smell from rancid nut oils, a very hard or very soggy texture, or any visible mould. If in doubt, throw it out. Eating within the best before date and following the storage advice avoids these problems.

Do the flavours store differently?

All three Nola flavours follow the same storage advice, but they react a little differently to heat. Dark Chocolate is the most sensitive because the chocolate chips and drizzle soften first. Mixed Berry contains freeze-dried strawberry and blueberry, which can soften if they absorb moisture, so keeping that bag sealed matters most. Oat and Honey is the hardiest of the three.

Frequently asked questions

Do granola balls need to be refrigerated?

Unopened bags can be kept in a cool, dry place. Once opened, Nola recommends resealing the bag and keeping it in the fridge.

Can you freeze granola balls?

Yes. Freeze them in an airtight container and thaw for 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature before eating.

Why have my granola balls gone sticky?

They have likely been exposed to heat or moisture. Store them somewhere cooler, keep the bag sealed and refrigerate after opening.
